Distinguishing between these is the first step in understanding which approach may be helpful.<\/p>\n<h2>What is the difference between discoloration and a scar?<\/h2>\n<p>A flat red mark may be post-inflammatory erythema, while a flat brown mark may be post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. These differ from a true scar. In a scar, the skin's structure changes: narrow, deep ice-pick scars, broader depressed areas or raised scars may be seen. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aad.org\/public\/diseases\/acne\/derm-treat\/scars\">The American Academy of Dermatology<\/a> explains that flat discoloration is often not considered a scar.<\/p>\n<h2>How are the options determined?<\/h2>\n<p>Active acne is controlled first; new scars can continue to form while new inflamed lesions are still developing. For flat marks, time, sun protection and appropriate medical care may be central. For depressed or raised scars, the subtype, depth, skin tone and previous treatments are assessed. In some cases, laser, microneedling, radiofrequency or other scar-focused procedures may be discussed; no single method can be said to have an equal effect on all scars. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aad.org\/public\/diseases\/acne\/derm-treat\/scars\/treatment\">The AAD's guide to acne-scar assessment<\/a> also states that different types of scars require different approaches.<\/p>\n<h2>What should be expected from treatment?<\/h2>\n<p>The aim is often to reduce the appearance of a scar; complete disappearance is not always possible. The number of sessions and recovery time are not fixed. Temporary redness or discoloration may occur after some procedures. A discussion of risks and benefits is particularly important in darker skin tones and with active acne.
